Lantern Parade
Each year Ballachulish witnesses the now traditional Lantern Parade on Hogmanay. The lanterns, mostly made by the younger members of the community, set off from the village hall and make a circuit of the village, via Loanfern, West Laroch and Albert Road to return to the hall (weather permitting). There, they are ‘ceremonially’ burnt on a bonfire before fireworks finish the evening. Hot Chocolate, Mulled Wine and nibbles are also available in the hall.
The lanterns show a wide range of interests and ideas, with creatures such as fish, sharks, dinosaurs, owls and bats alongside TV icons like the daleks. There are also planes, helicopters, trains, rockets and one year a Formula 1 car. Other lanterns are simply balloons or traditional boxes, as well as a few flowers and some designs of pure fantasy!
