Ballachulish Community Association SCIO
History
Ballachulish Community Association was formed following a public meeting in September 1981. The original purpose of the Association was to provide the community with a new village hall, as task which was achieved in November 1985 when the current building opened.
Fast Forward to 2010 and the Association embarked on a major refurbishment of the hall to bring it into the 21st Century. This saw new heating, refurbished toilets, rewiring, redecoration throughout and a new store room constructed. The hall is now a great community resource which is widely used by local groups and mountaineering groups as well as becoming a popular wedding venue.
The Association don’t just operate the hall however, in the past the local Arts Society brought a huge range of shows and performances into the village hall, and whilst this is no longer viable in the current economic climate, we still try to encourage a wide range of events and performances during the course of a year. See the Hall Events page for a selection of regular events held by the association.
Other Projects
Community Action Plan
One of the big projects that the Community Association has led recently is the creation of the Community Action Plan, working with the community forum, a group including representatives from every community group and organisation. Please see the Community Council page for more information.
Heritage
There is a growing interest in the community in preserving and showcasing the rich history and heritage of our community. This has seen the creation of the Ballachulish Timeline and a series of themed exhibitions held in the hall drawing in photos and artifacts from the local community. A long term plan is to create a museum space within the village.
For further information on the history of the area, see the Ballachulish Heritage pages.
Community Spring Clean
Over the last couple of the Community Association have been working with the Community Council and other local organisations to improve the appearance of our village. This has seen a major spring clean weekend in April, with litter picks and vegetation clearance, followed by further days during the year to keep the village looking good. We have also carried out a lot of work within the Quarry to clear the brambles and other scrub that had started to take over.
